Frequently Asked Questions About Residential & Commercial Roofing
The RJ Ramos Roofing team wants to be there to answer your roofing questions.
Can I Install a new roof over the old, existing shingle roof?
This is a cost-effective alternative to replacing your entire roof. However, it can only be used in certain circumstances. If you have already done this once, have shingles that are curling, or have existing leaks, putting new shingles over an existing roof is not a viable option.
Does it need to be a certain temperature outside before a new roof can be installed?
Ideally, roofing is installed in warmer weather but that's not a requirement. It depends on the type of roof but many roofing systems can be installed as long as it's above 40° F, but for asphalt it should be between 70°F and 80°F. The main concern is making sure the adhesives can be activated properly.
How do I know I need a roof?
To determine if you need a new roof, it's best to get an assessment from a reputable roofing professional. There are some factors that can impact whether you need new roofing such as the age, the current condition, whether or not you're missing shingles, or if you have leaks.
Will I have to replace my gutters when my roof is installed?
Not necessarily. If the gutters are in good condition, your contractor may be able to salvage them. Even if your gutters only need minor repairs, they may still be usable. However, many homeowners opt to go ahead and do both at the same time. It's good to have a whole new system in place but not always a must.
How should I choose a roofer?
As with any other job for your home, you should always get multiple quotes for a roofing job. However, the point is not to find the cheapest rate. It's about finding the best value which is high-quality workmanship for an affordable rate. Ask people you know for referrals and check references before making your final decision.
How long should a new roof last?
The average asphalt shingle roof should last up to 20 years, with proper care and maintenance. Other types of roofing systems are designed to last much longer, such as metal or tile. Factors like proper building design and climate all play a role in how the roof holds up over time.
